Friday (today), N opens at the Point Loma Playhouse with performances continuing to March 10th. The Oceanside International Film Festival continues this weekend.
Saturday and Sunday, the 41st Annual San Diego Chinese New Year Fair will take place downtown. Ballet performances of The Many Loves of Don Juan will be given at the Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center in La Jolla.
Saturday, the 2nd Annual SoCal Sumo Open will take place at the City Heights/Weingart Library and Performance Annex. The Afroture Exhibition at City College will showcase Black future perspectives in photography. The will be a Bagpipe Concert at Montezuma Park. At the North University Community Library, there will be an art talk on Botticelli and Florence, 1434 to 1494. There will be a Lunar New Year Celebration at the Hsi Fang Temple. The 3rd Annual Tribute to the Reggae Legends will take place at the Worldbeat Center. Colombian Latin pop rock band Morat will perform at Viejas Arena. At the Upses Portuguese Hall in Point Loma, there will be a Portuguese Kids Comedy Show.
Sunday, the House of USA at the International Cottages in Balboa Park will host their annual African American Heritage Celebration. At the Digital Gym, there will be a presentation of Vanya by National Theatre Live. There will be a repeat showing next Wednesday. San Diego Dance Theatre will host a Flamenco Music and Dance Tablao Cuadro Workshop. At the Central Library, Professor Samantha Springs will give a talk on Fearing the Black Body: The Racial Origins of Fat Phobia. At the Seaside Center for Spiritual Living, there will be a Carnatic Vocal Concert. Mediterranean Nights at Saffrono Lounge Bar and Grill will feature Flamenco with Roots, Habibi Fusion, Monica & Sophia, Natasha and more. Peruvian music group Los Ardiles will perform at the Joan B. Kroc Theatre. The Hill Street Country Club will present Sound and Liberation: Black History Month Edition, a night of experimental performance celebrating Black expression. At the Persian Cultural Center, they will screen and discuss the film My Happy Family.
Monday at the Malcolm X Library, Asian Story Theater along with their partners, San Diego Black Ensemble Theatre and Teatro Mascara Magica, will hold a meeting to discuss their plans for a new theatrical production about the Census. They are looking for writers, composers, visual and performing artists who might want to contribute to the effort. Artist Pablo José Ramírez will present a talk about contemporary issues in art regarding indigeneity. The Worldbeat Cultural Center's Afro-Mexican program ambassador Jorge Gonzalez will talk about the recent official recognition of Mexico's Black citizens.
Tuesday at the San Diego Children's Discovery Museum, Samahan will present their Stories of Us program that will feature traditional music and dance. The Gilbert Castellanos Quartet will perform at the Senses Human Bistro. The Digital Gym will screen the film Millennium Mambo. At Warwick's, Yangsze Choo, NYT bestselling author, will discuss and sign her new book, The Fox Wife.
Wednesday at UCSD, San Diego’s Poet Laureate Jason Magabo Perez will read from some of his published works of poetry.
Next Thursday, French comedian Armando Anto will perform his music-laced comedy at Mic Drop.
Next weekend, comedian Cristela Alonzo will perform several sets at Mic Drop Comedy.
Next Friday, the Chinese Historical Museum will open its new exhibit Anna May Wong: Icon of the Silver Screen. The exhibit will be on display until March 10th. Grammy award-winning ensemble Quetzal will perform at Park and Market. Comedian Nasser Al-Rayess is bringing back his interactive comedy show, Habiiibi Nights, to the Charcoal House Restaurant & Bar. Mexican stand-up comedian Carlos Ballarta will have a show at Balboa Theatre.
Next Saturday, there will be a MLK Gospel Music Celebration at the Joan Kroc Theatre on University Ave. There will be a Taste the World food fest benefit for the Peace Corp at the First Unitarian Universalist Church. Los Shadows will perform at the Quartyard. Centro Cultural de la Raza will host a Connecting en la Cocina Get Together. La Morra will perform at St. James by-the-Sea Episcopal Church. At Park and Market Peter Sprague and other awesomely talented musicians will present their Estrada do Sol – The Music of Jobim concert. Spanish group Las Migas will perform at the outdoor Epstein Family Amphitheater at UCSD.
Next Sunday, there will be an Opening Reception for the aforementioned Anna May Wong: Icon of the Silver Screen exhibit. They even have an Anna May Wong look-alike contest! Corrido singer and musician Edgardo Nuñez will perform at the San Diego Civic Theatre.
